HDR Scituate Light

Finally went ahead and purchased the photomatix program.  In short the program converts a series of photos at different exposures and blends them into one detailed photo.  I am going to try and do more of these photos, but I thought I would share one!

Hazy, Hot and Humid Moon

It was a true New England scorcher today!  I think that is what I love the most about New England is the extremes of the weather, you get days like this, then in January we will have sub zero wind chills with a howling Northeast wind!  Anyway I had noticed the past few nights that the new moon is in the process of moveing toward the first quarter, the only problem was the past few nights when I noticed the moon was in the process of setting and sliped below the tree line so I was not able to get a photo.  I took this photo right from my backyard nothing special, I just thought it looked cool!

Minot Light Sunrise

I don't get many  mornings where I can actually dig in and take my time with trying to capture a good sunrise photo due to my work schedule.  Come to think of it the only morning where I have the time is Saturdays, with that in mind I decided to head out and see what I could come up with.  My intent was to drive over to Sandy Beach in Cohassett and try and get some decent shots of Minots light from a different vantage point other then Minot's Beach.  As I was heading over there I could not help but notice that there were going to be some good shots with more to them if I set up shop in the Atlantica Restaurant parking lot.  I thought these came out fair, the only problem this morning was the mosquitos were out in full force!

Strawberry Moon

Tonight was what is known as the strawberry Moon, in short just a full moon I guess they give these things nicknames depending on the time of year etc...  I was totally unaware it was happening tonight until I saw a story on Accuweather this afternoon.  I guess the weather weenie inside of me should have had an idea it might be around the time of a full moon or new moon as the tides have been running high this week!

I used my app that I have on my Ipod to see where might be the best place to go to try and get something in the picture itself, anyone can go take a photo of the moon but I like to have something else in there if I can work it.  In the end the jetty was the final destination!  I used the telephoto lens with an aperture of 5.6 and i messed around with the shutter speed here and there to give the water a little blur at times while still keeping the photo properly exposed.  At one point two people walked out to the end and they did end up in the photo, but it was just two instead of the 50 that are in my other moon photo!  Eventually they left and I got some nice ones without them in the photo.

April Fools Storm

A late season coastal storm impacted the region Thursday night into the start of Friday.  The storm came with a mix of rain and snow.  Some spots received just over half a foot, especially in Worcester County where Fitchburg checked in with 8 inches.  Here in Scituate we got maybe an inch and a half or so, mostly on the grassy surfaces.  It was actually more then I thought we were going to get.  With any coastal usually comes some good picture opportunities.

It was tough today because even though the storm had subsided for the most part there was a constant drizzle which made it difficult to actually get out of the truck for an extended time without damaging the camera.  Also the drizzle and fog made visibility less then ideal for great pictures, but its a Nor' Easter and no one said the visibility was going to be great!

The other aspect that was a disappointment was there was not much in the way of powerful winds with this storm.  When you get the strong winds that is when you get your waves over 10 feet and that was just not happening today.  It is April first and the days of coastal storms are numbered, with a little luck maybe we can get one or two more as they provide some of the better photo opportunities!

Rough Seas

I was out and about today and I took a ride by the light house, as you can seem to find a picture or two.  The seas were a little rough today and the tides have been running high this week.  I managed to grab a few good ones, there was an old lobster trap that had washed ashore that made for a nice touch in a few of the photos I thought.  I also today decided to take a few pictures in black and white and see how those came out.
